About the role:
Biomedical Research is seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist who will work on Biomarker data generation and Formulation Support in the lab in the Oncology Pharmacology department. The candidate will be an important point of contact for daily preparation of preclinical dosing formulations to support preclinical discovery projects at our Cambridge, MA facility. The position offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in understanding how preclinical formulations support pharmacology studies for the progress of discovery drug candidates as well as contribute to characterization of drug candidates via biomarker studies, with chances to create significant experimental and intellectual contributions to our organization.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine biomarker assays, such as immuno-based assays (e.g., tumor lysate preparation, ELISA, MesoScale, capillary electrophoresis, Western analysis) and RT-PCR
  • Support formulation preparation for pharmacology studies
  • Meet quality, quantity and timelines for preparation of formulations/buffers/vehicles to support in vivo studies
  • Order/weigh/manage compound supply and formulation consumables inventory
  • Routine lab support such as mobile phase preparation, pH meter calibration, and basic troubleshooting of lab equipment
  • Generate formulation protocols describing preparation of formulations for use at internal and external labs
  • Work on assignments that are routine in nature with supervision for more detailed tasks and troubleshooting

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $92,800 - $139,200 / year for the Senior Scientist I and $102,400 - $153,600 / year for the Senior Scientist II. While salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Essential Requirements:

  • This position will be located at the Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely. This position will not require travel as defined by the business (domestic and/ or international). This role will not provide relocation.
  • This position is a 100% lab-based position and requires the ability to be flexible with working hours to support early morning preparations as needed
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related discipline, with 3+ years of industrial research experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a compounding formulation lab
  • Meticulous laboratory approach, careful adherence to protocol and excellent lab notebook documentation skills
  • Awareness for safe handling of powders/chemicals, potentially dangerous materials and equipment
  • Basic competencies in chemistry and familiarity with a chemistry lab setting
  • Conducting lab assays for assessing proteins and/or mRNA (e.g., BCA, immunoassay-based formats (ELISA, MSD), Western blots and RT-PCR), a basic understanding of biology and a desire to learn and conduct biomarker assays
  • Working with poorly soluble compounds in low quantities and demonstrated flexibility to handle a diverse array of tasks each day with limited supervision and great attention to detail
